It suits desk-based staff and administrators on USB-C computers who sign in to workstations, VPNs and cloud services and do not need tap-to-phone authentication.
The YubiKey 5Ci has both a USB-C and an Apple Lightning connector, so a single key works with USB-C computers and with iPhones and iPads that use Lightning. It supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, PIV smart card, OpenPGP, OATH and Yubico OTP. It has no NFC. It is designed for mixed Apple and USB-C environments where staff move between a Mac or PC and an iOS device, and it is MFi compliant.

It supports FIDO2/WebAuthn passkeys and FIDO U2F, and deliberately leaves out smart card, OpenPGP and OTP functions. That makes it a simple choice for organisations and users who need strong, phishing-resistant sign-in to cloud and web services but not the full YubiKey 5 feature set. Credentials are held on a secure element, and the key needs no battery. Consumer and enterprise editions exist; the enterprise edition is sold through YubiKey as a Service.
